Feeling Frosty: Styling Denim-on-Denim

One of 2020s standout trends is supposed to be denim-on-denim. While I’m not quite ready to dive headfirst into a full-blown navy-on-navy ensemble, I dipped my toe in the water today by pairing my navy denim jacket with my black jeans. Baby steps!

I found this amazing Lauren Ralph Lauren white turtleneck at TJ Maxx the other day, and I am obsessed with it already. I love turtlenecks, sweaters, and especially combinations of the two, so I’m guessing I’ll be wearing this one a lot this season. I think it looks super classic, especially when paired with other neutrals and closet staples.

All About Embroidery

I’ve been super into embroidery lately. I went through a phase a few years ago where I was staunchly against it, no matter what form it was in. (This was during the phase where boho fashion was super in, so the embroidery that came along with that trend just wasn’t really my style.) I’ve been super digging the embroidery I’ve seen recently, though, and when I found this skirt at Uptown Cheapskate I knew I had to snag it!

I wasn’t really sure how to wear it for a while (it actually hung on its hanger with its tag still on up until this morning,) but I love this #OOTD for work or play! My office is pretty frosty, so I made sure to pair it with a denim jacket. (Not pictured, but it looks super cute to tie the jacket around your waist if you get hot, too!) Now that I got the ball rolling, I’m excited to pair this skirt with more options in the future.

Float Like a Butterfly, Sting Like a Bee

I worked at Old Navy last summer, and in case you can’t tell, I became a pretty big fan. I love their boyfriend tees, especially the striped ones. They’re comfy, casual, and can be worn so many different ways. (And honestly, my employee discount was a huge incentive to load up. That markdown was killer!)

I’ve worn them for almost a year now, and I probably need to go get more this summer from their new collection. #OOTDs like this are perfect for so many occasions, from class, to errands, to brunch! Tragically, Old Navy doesn’t carry this exact shirt anymore, but I’ve linked a similar one below.

SHOP THE LOOK:

Bandana: Black Bandana – Hobby Lobby
Top: Striped Yellow Shirt (similar)
Shorts: Cotton Twill Shorts – H&M
Shoes: Zone Ankle Strap Sandal – Steve Madden

What is your go-to look for hot summer days? I’m trying to incorporate some new casual pieces into my wardrobe, and I’m looking for inspiration!

Feeling Blue

This #OOTD was actually one of my favorite outfits during the summer of 2018. I had recently gotten a job at Old Navy (with a killer employee discount!) and was redoing my wardrobe. I hadn’t completely given up the preppy look, so I was still looking for ways to incorporate more classic pieces into my look. Hence, the statement necklace.

Blue has always been one of my favorite colors, and I love getting to combine different shades in this look. They coordinate, but don’t clash. I don’t wear a lot of monochromatic looks (besides the occasional all-black one) so I love getting to do something a little different from my day-to-day! (Although the shirt is striped, which seems to make up a good majority of my wardrobe sometimes.)

Top: Blue Boyfriend Pocket Tee (similar)
Necklace: Blue Statement Necklace (similar)

Have you every undergone a complete style transformation? Mine was last summer, and I’m so grateful for every penny I spent tailoring my new wardrobe to fit my current taste. It’s what led me here!

Back to Basics

I love wardrobe basics. While I also appreciate trendier items to jazz up my closet a bit, there’s just something so classic and timeless about a items that will never go out of style.

For this #OOTD, I made an outfit made completely out of wardrobe basics. A piece that has served me especially well is my denim shirt. Since it’s always a classic piece, I hadn’t realized how long I had had it in my closet. If you had asked me, I probably would have guessed 3 years. Well, I recently found a photo of me wearing it- from 2013! The moral of this story is that when you buy quality pieces, they’ll stick with you for years.

Born With Good Jeans

Before I get into today’s #OOTD details, I just wanted to share some huge personal news I got on Friday! Back in February, I applied to be a part of Gaylord’s 4+1 Program, where, if accepted, I would be able to start graduate-level course work for my senior year, finish up my bachelor’s degree (in May 2020,) and then graduate with my master’s degree in May 2021. As you may have guessed, on Friday I got the news that I had been accepted and will be starting in the 4+1 Program this fall! I am elated, to say the least, and am so ready to start with my graduate courses in August. Okay, now that I got that out of the way, on to today’s #OOTD…

I had a concert band “dress rehearsal” (AKA just an extra weekend rehearsal) today, so I wanted to make sure I would be comfy when I was sitting and playing for two hours. I opted for a traditional-denim-on-black-denim ensemble. It’s a similar vibe to an outfit I wore a few weeks ago, although that one was paired with a black dress instead!

SHOP THE LOOK:

Bandana: Leopard Print Bandana – Hobby Lobby
Jacket: Cropped Denim Jacket (similar)
Tank Top: Black Rib-Knit Tank – Old Navy
Belt: Loop Belt – Target
Jeans: Mid-Rise Rockstar Super Skinny Jeans – Old Navy
Shoes: Advantage Sneaker – Adidas

Anyways, I’m still kind of in shock over my grad school acceptance! I knew I had the grades and got great rec letters, but it’s still so cool to see my hard work pay off so tangibly. If you’re interested in what I’m doing as a public relations student, you can check out my professional portfolio online at www.kaylamccullough.com.

I’ll be back with a new #OOTD soon, so check back for that!

Hello, Sunshine

Yesterday was windy and in the 80s, but today is cold and in the 40s. It’s mid-April, so this sudden temperature drop is pretty annoying, but I also really appreciate getting one last chance to wear some of my colder-weather pieces. I love turtlenecks, and although I have some short-sleeve and no-sleeve ones that are more appropriate for spring and summer, I feel like a long-sleeved turtleneck should be reserved for colder weather.

So here’s today’s #OOTD! The yellow turtleneck is kinda cropped and a little hard to tuck into things, but I made it work with the black belt which helps keep it in place. I think the black belt helps tie in the black from my riding boots, too.

SHOP THE LOOK:

Turleneck: Yellow Turtleneck (similar)
Belt: Loop Belt – Target
Jeans: Mid-Rise Rockstar Super Skinny Jeans – Old Navy
Boots: Ellie Waterproof Knee High Riding Boot – BLONDO

70 degree weather, please come back! I have more spring #OOTDs I want to share!

A Big Re-Leaf

Yesterday, I had a 10 page research paper due for my US-Latin American Relations class. I usually don’t mind writing papers, especially when I get to choose the subject matter, but for some reason I put that monstrosity of a research paper off until 10 hours before the due date. Thanks to some study tunes, the focused vibe of the Bizzell Memorial Library, and lots of coffee, I got it done with an hour and a half to spare. It was a real relief, for sure.

Since I was still feeling strained from all the brain exertion I put forth yesterday, I made sure to keep to a more laid-back #OOTD today to help me recover. It was a little toasty in my jeans, but comfy nonetheless!

SHOP THE LOOK:

Sunglasses: Cateye Sunglasses – Target
Shirt: V-Neck Tee (similar)
Belt: Loop Belt – Target
Jeans: Mid-Rise Rockstar 24/7 Jeans – Old Navy
Shoes: Advantage Sneaker – Adidas

The weather is getting to be in the 80s consistently and I am so excited! It’s about time to pack up my winter gear and bring the summer wardrobe back out full-time. Keep checking back to see my next #OOTD!

Comfy-Casual

This #OOTD is actually from a few days ago, but I never got around to posting it with all the Third Degree craziness!

I definitely didn’t need a belt to keep these denim shorts up, but I think that it adds such a cute touch anyways. I’m obsessed with comfy-casual outfits, perfect for everything from going to class, to running errands, to grabbing lunch with a friend. I love the contrast of the black shirt and belt with the light-wash shorts!

SHOP THE LOOK:

Sunglasses: Cateye Sunglasses – Target
Shirt: Boyfriend Linen-Blend Pocket Tee – Old Navy
Belt: Loop Belt – Target
Shorts: High-Waisted Denim Shorts (similar)
Shoes: Ward Sneaker – Vans

The end of the semester is getting crazy, but I’m trying to keep posting as regularly as I can! Creating different looks and sharing them with y’all brings me so much joy and I love taking time out of my day to write these #OOTD entries.

Seas the Day

Yesterday, me and my crew rolled out of Norman at 5 a.m. and began the 21-hour drive to St. Augustine, Florida. The drive was rough, but we made it, and didn’t end up hating each other in the process. We finally arrived at our house at 2 a.m., exhausted but excited for the next few days.

Today it was a little rainy and cold, so we decided to forego the beach and go thrift shopping and grocery shopping. We may go downtown a little later, but for now we’re content at home making homemade pico de gallo (thanks, Rachel!) and watching the new season of Queer Eye.

Knowing that we were going to be out and about, I opted for an #OOTD that was simple, fun for spring break, and easy to get on and off when we went to the thrift store. I’m hoping we get some warmer weather soon!

SHOP THE LOOK:

Shirt: Black Crop Top (similar)
Belt: Loop Belt – Target
Jeans: Mid-Rise Rockstar Super Skinny Jeans – Old Navy
Shoes: Advantage Sneaker – Adidas

I got some great stuff thrifting, so I’m excited to incorperate them into my #OOTDs over the next few days. Check back soon for another vacation update!
